Butanone, also known as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), is an organic compound with the formula CH3C(O)CH2CH3. This colourless liquid ketone has a sharp, sweet odor reminiscent of acetone. It is an isomer of another solvent, tetrahydrofuran.

Applications
2-Butanone is used as a solvent and for extractions in the pharmaceutical industry. 2-butanone acts as oxidant for the iridium-catalyzed oxidations of primary alcohols. It is useful for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation on MgO.
