Description
2-ethyl hexanol appears as a dark brown liquid with an aromatic odor. Insoluble in water and less dense than water. Flash point between 140 – 175 °F. Contact may irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes.
Xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol, also known as 2-ethylhexyl alcohol or octyl alcohol, is a member of the class of compounds known as fatty alcohols. Fatty alcohols are aliphatic alcohols consisting of a chain of a least six carbon atoms. Thus, xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol is considered to be a fatty alcohol lipid molecule. Xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol is practically insoluble (in water) and an extremely weak acidic compound (based on its pKa). Xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol can be found in a number of food items such as tea, cereals and cereal products, fats and oils, and alcoholic beverages, which makes xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol can be found primarily in feces and saliva. Xi-2-ethyl-1-hexanol exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans.

Applications
2-Eethyl hexanol is used to make plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride. Reaction with phthalic anhydride gives bis(2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate (DOP, DEHP). Reaction with adipic acid gives bis(2-ethyl hexyl) adipate.
Moreover, esterification with acrylic acid gives 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate for use in adhesives and paints.
On the other hand, because it can dissolve many organic materials well, 2-ethyl hexanol is widely used as a low-volatility solvent.

Applications
2-Ethyl-1-hexanol is used as a flavor, fragrance and plasticizer. It is used to prepare diesters bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. It reacts with nitric acid and used as an octane booster. Its ester, 2-ethylhexyl ester is a component of sunscreen octocrylene. Further, it is used as a low volatility solvent for resins, animal fats, waxes, vegetable oils and petroleum derivatives. In addition to this, it is used in plasticizer, dioctyl phthalate, which is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride products.
Notes
Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, alkalies, strong bases and strong acids.
