Dimethyl Carbonate
Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) is also considered a green reagent. It is used as a methylating and carbonylating reagent in organic synthesis.
CAS #: 616-38-6
EINECS #: 210-478-4
Synonyms: DMC, Methyl carbonate, Carbonic acid dimethyl ester
Molecular Formula: C3H6O3
Description
Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) is a colorless, fast evaporating, mild non-offensive odor VOC exempt solvent with a wide range of applications. It is used in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, production of polycarbonates, lubricants, polyurethanes, cleaning and degreasing solvents, construction materials such as paints and adhesives, fuel additives, and in biodiesel production.
Dimethyl Carbonate
anhydrous, ≥99%
Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is a versatile, non-toxic, biodegradable reagent with tunable chemical reactivity. It serves as a green alternative to dimethyl sulfate or methyl halides and phosgene for methylation and carboxylation reactions. DMC can be prepared by the base-catalyzed reaction between carbon dioxide and methanol.

Dimethyl Carbonate Applications
Paint & Coatings
It is used in solvent-borne systems: coating parts, architectural components, traffic paints, steel drum linings, floor coatings, and concrete sealers. It can also be used as a carrier solvent or disperse medium for binders, pigments, and colorants, as well as an effective paint thinner and multipurpose solvent.
Inks
It replaces toluene and ethyl acetate solvents in Gravure inks and is used in the production of water-based flexographic inks.
Biodiesel Additive
DMC is used as an intermediate in the preparation of diphenylcarbonate, for the synthesis of Bisphenol-A-polycarbonate found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins.
Household, Institutional & Industrial
DMC offers low toxicity and rapid biodegradability properties for solvent degreasing formulations.
Biodiesel Additive
Due to its high oxygen content and suitable boiling point, it is soluble in diesel fuel. Diesel fuel blended with Dimethyl Carbonate improves combustion and reduces matter emissions significantly.
Electronics and Batteries
DMC is the most promising electrolyte solvent for lithium-ion battery due to its good solvation and low viscosity properties. It is rapidly used in the computer, cell phones, hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufacturing markets.
