Applications
4-methyl-2-pentanone is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, gums, resins, varnishes, paints, lacquers, nitrocellulose, certain polymers and as a denaturing agent. It acts as a precursor for the preparation of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-p-phenylene diamine (6PPD), which finds application as an antiozonant in tires. Its aqueous solution serves as a developer for PMMA electron beam lithography resist.
Notes
DESCRIPTION
Unlike the other common ketone solvents, acetone and MEK, MIBK has quite low solubility in water, making it useful for liquid-liquid extraction. It is commonly used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, varnishes and adhesives. MIBK is also used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of a rubber anti-ozonant additive in tyres. It has a similar polarity to ethyl acetate, but greater stability towards aqueous acid and base. It can be used to extract gold, silver and other precious metals from cyanide solutions, such as those found at gold mines, to determine the levels of those dissolved metals. Diisobutyl ketone (DIBK), a related lipophilic ketone, is also used for this purpose. Methyl isobutyl ketone is also used as a denaturing agent for denatured alcohol. When mixed with water or isopropyl alcohol MIBK serves as a developer for PMMA electron beam lithography resist. MIBK is used as a solvent for CS in the preparation of the CS spray used currently by British police forces.
Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) by Junyuan Petroleum Group is used as a solvent for adhesive systems. It exhibits a faint ketonic and camphor-like odor. This solvent is stable and does not polymerize. Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) is highly compatible with a variety of organic reagents. The shelf life of this product is 1 year.
Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) is a colorless liquid exhibiting a faint ketonic and camphor-like odor. One of the most useful among the acetone derivate solvents, it has a medium evaporation rate. MIBK is stable and does not polymerize. MIBK is highly compatible with a variety of organic reagents and is a good solvent for a wide range of industrial materials. MIBK is also used principally as a solvent for protective coatings, lacquers, and varnishes. In production of antioxidants, as a solvent, surfactant, especially in chemical seperation. in the manufacture of methyl isobutyl carbinol; and as a denaturing agent for ethyl alcohol. It is a synthetic flavouring adjuvant.
Other possible applications: End uses for MIBK include coating solvents, rare-metal extraction, process solvent for adhesives, ink formulations, leather finishing, pharmaceuticals, and as a chemical intermediate. MIBK is an excellent solvent for cellulose-based and resin-based coating systems. It is a useful solvent for pyrethrins, rubber cements and model dopes. It is a chemical intermediate for rubber antioxidants and specialty surfactants. MIBK contains dewaxing and separating properties, which can be used in the purification of different chemicals, mineral oils, tall oil, stearic acid and butanol.
