Description
Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate is produced by a 4 steps reaction based on benzene as feedstock. There are 3 isomers of MDI : 2,2-MDI, 2,4-MDI, and 4,4-MDI. The 4,4 isomer is known as pure or monomeric MDI (mMDI).The Polymeric MDI so called Crude MI contains monomeric MDI and products with higher MW (pMDI). MDI is used to produce foam for Insulation, PU elastomer, shoe soles, systems houses, synthetic leather, cold stores, sport floor, foundry, mining. MDI is the least hazardous of the commonly available isocyanates because of its low vapour pression but it is not benign.
MDI is mainly used for bonding rubber to nylon and other adhesives. It is also used in the manufacture of lacquer coatings and in the production of polyurethane resins and spandex fibers.

Chemical Properties
Applications
4,4′-Methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) acts as a monomer in the production of polyurethane. The rigid polyurethane foams are good thermal insulators, which find applications in all freezers and refrigerators, as well as in buildings. It is also used as an industrial strength adhesive, which is available to end consumers as various high-strength bottled glue preparations.

Methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) is mainly used in polyurethane foams, which account for about 80% of global consumption. Rigid foams are mostly used in construction, refrigeration, packaging and insulation. MDI is also used to make binders, elastomers, adhesives, sealants and coatings. The positions of the isocyanate groups influences their reactivities. 4,4′-MDI is a symmetrical molecule and thus has two groups of equal reactivity. 2,4′-MDI is an asymmetrical molecule and thus has two groups of different reactivities. The group at the 4-position is approximately four times more reactive than the group at the 2-position.
Applications
The major application of 4,4′-MDI is the production of rigid polyurethane. Typically, one tonne of polyurethane foam needs 0.616 tonne of MDI and 0.386 tonne of polyol, with 0.054 tonne pentane as a blowing agent. These rigid polyurethane foams are good thermal insulators and used in nearly all freezers and refrigerators worldwide, as well as buildings. Typical polyols used are polyethylene adipate (a polyester) and poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (a polyether).4,4′-MDI is also used as an industrial strength adhesive, which is available to end consumers as various high-strength bottled glue preparations.
