Description

1-Methoxy-2-propanol (Propylene glycol methyl ether, PGME), a glycol ether, can be synthesized by reacting propylene oxide with methanol in the presence of ZnMgAl (zinc-magnesium-aluminium) catalysts. Its degradation by microorganisms in different soil types has been investigated. An oral reference dose (RfD) and an inhalation reference concentration (RfC) values of PGME have been obtained from inhalation studies in F344 rats and B6C3F1 mice.

Propylene Glycol Methyl Ether is used as a solvent for a variety of industrial and consumer applications: for paints, varnishes, celluloses, acrylics, dyes, inks, stains, etc. It may be used as an industrial paint stripper, or as antifreeze in diesel engines. It is used as a chemical intermediate, in cleaners and degreasers, in coatings, and in the manufacture of electronics. It may be used in agricultural, cosmetic, and adhesives products.

Liquid and vapor of this product are flammable. Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Avoid breathing vapor. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel a long distance and accumulate in low-lying areas. Ignition and/or flash back may occur. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when using this product. Always observe good personal hygiene measures. Keep container closed. Do not store in aluminum, copper, galvanized iron or steel. Store in carbon steel or phenolic-lined steel drums. Avoid contact with air if storing for extended periods of time. Please see Glycol Ether PM Safety Data Sheet for full safety and compatibility information.
