Applications: The isocyanate functional groups in TDI react with hydroxyl groups to form carbamate (urethane) links. The two isocyanate groups in TDI react at different rates: The 4-position is approximately four times more reactive than the 2-position. 2,6-TDI is a symmetrical molecule and thus has two isocyanate groups of similar reactivity, similar to the 2-position on 2,4-TDI. However, since both isocyanate groups are attached to the same aromatic ring, reaction of one isocyanate group will cause a change in the reactivity of the second isocyanate group.

It is used in the production of flexible polyurethane foams.

TDI 80/20 Polyol Toluene Diisocyanate

TDI 80/20: Mainly refers to a mixture of 80% by mass of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and 20% by mass of 2,6-toluene diisocyanate. Sometimes also refers to toluene diisocyanate, aliases: toluene diisocyanate, toluene, and methyl phenylene diisocyanate. Nitration of toluene produces dinitrotoluene, and then reduces toluene diamine. Toluene diamine reacts with phosgene to obtain TDI. Colorless liquid. There is a pungent smell. The color becomes darker in daylight. Sodium hydroxide or tertiary amine can cause polymerization. Reacts with water to produce carbon dioxide. TDI 80/20 containers should be kept properly closed and stored indoors in a well-ventilated and fire-proof place.When opening the containers, operators should wear go les, gloves and rubber aprons.Containers should be handled carefully to avoid damage. In case of leakage, transfer it into another proper container in a well- ventilated and dry place. When opening the cap, use an opener or wrench. Once the cap is loosened, pause until the high pressure in the container equalizes with the atmospheric pressure, then open the cap slowly.

Industrial uses

TDI (toluene diisocyanate) is one of the commonly used polyisocyanates, and polyisocyanates are polyurethane (PU) materials and important basic raw materials. TDI commonly used in polyurethane industry is a mixture of 2,4-TDI and 2,6-TDI isomers, including three commonly used brands: TDI-80/20, TDI-100 and TDI-65/35. The preceding figures indicate the content of 2,4-TDI in the composition. For example, 80 in TDI-80/20 indicates that its composition is 80% 2,4-TDI and 20% 2,6-TDI; 100 in TDI-100 basically represents 2,4-TDI (about 98%) and 2,6-TDI has few isomers. It is mainly used for producing flexible polyurethane foam and polyurethane elastomers, coatings, adhesives and so on.
